Jose Reyes announced as MLB 2K8 cover athlete

Last week Reyes was announced as the new cover athlete for the now 6 year old 2K baseball franchise ending a 5 year domination of 2K covers by the boys in pinstripes. Previously we’ve seen Giambi and Jeter exclusively adorning the cover of 2K’s baseball games so this a welcome change for many fans of the game and I think it speaks to the new direction this franchise has taken over the past two years. The recognition of Reyes is big considering that he isn’t known for his strikeouts or home-runs and instead is mainly known for his speed and defense. Its also interesting considering the huge collapse that the Mets experienced at the end of 2007, the worst of its kind in baseball’s long history, you wouldn’t expect a Met to get the cover. Reyes led the league last year in stolen bases with 78 and was fourth in the NL in runs with 119.
Next year I’d like to see a pitcher (i.e. Josh Beckett, or the 2008 Cy Young winner) but we’ll have to wait and see.
MLB 2K8 is expected to be out next spring.
