My thoughts on 2k Legends Football

Bill Harris, of Dubious Quality, made a good post regarding All Pro 2k8 mentioning how important Legends are to their original teams. While I agree with this, I think it’s assuming 2k Sports will get the legends “right”. While most sports games have legends in their games, these all-time virtual models are little more than either a name on the back of a jersey or a maxed out attributes-robo player.

I don’t think having legends in a game with or without real teams will have any impact on the quality of All-Pro 2k8 if they don’t get the player styles down. I think modeling how a great player passes, rushes or tackles and that differance from an average player would push the football genre and make this game a solid buy.

If you think about it no football game has gotten these difference right. Even the acclaimed 2k5 only scratched the surface of player interaction. Take the interaction of the WR and CB. How different would you play offense knowing that Champ Bailey is lining up against your star WR? Or how would you play offense with Marvin Harrison playing against your average CB?

For football games to go to the next level, they need to do away with generic ratings and focus on individual position battles. I hope 2k8 or Madden takes this next step.
