My thoughts on the Wii (now pun free!)
Oh boy! My first blog entry in response to another blog entry. After reading Sport73’s entry from yesterday I can’t help but feel compelled to share my feelings on the same topic. I have nothing but respect for Sport73 but in this case I think he missed the mark, and by a large margin. The Wii isn’t supposed to blow you away graphically. The Wii isn’t supposed to make you feel like you’re Tiger Woods. The Wii isn’t supposed to offer a robust online community. Those are all things for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 to offer gamers. So if the Wii isn’t supposed to offer those things, what exactly does it offer? Well, that can be summed up in one word: FUN.
As an owner of all three current gen systems (they’re all out now so they are no longer next-gen people) I can safely say that all 3 systems satisfy a different need. I won’t get into that in this entry but it sounds like I have a topic for a future entry. Is the Wii something I turn on every day? No, it is not. Is the Wii something I scour the internet looking for new screenshots or news of delays? No, it is not. Is the Wii something that provides entertainment for my family? Yes, it is. The Wii really is a console that was released for anyone that grew up with a Nintendo console that now finds themselves all grown up with a family.
Remember family game night? You know, that one night a week when your parents and you and your siblings all got together and played Parcheesi, or Monopoly, or Clue. Well, the Wii is perfect for family game nights. The whole family can bowl or hit home runs with a smile on their face the whole time. The Wii is totally designed for family and friends playing together in the same room, not over the internet. Family get-togethers have gotten a kick in the pants. The family either wants to have get-togethers at my house or they want me to make sure I bring the Wii with.
My daughter loves making Mii’s and checking the Mii Parade to see if there’s any new Mii’s that have showed up. She loves playing some of the games I used to play as a kid. You know how cool it is playing a game like Super Mario Brothers or Zelda, that you played as a kid, with your 4-year-old daughter?
I don’t doubt that people whe were looking for sim sports titles or big Nintendo releases are bored, I would be too if that’s what I was expecting from my Wii. I’ve said it before on the forums and I’ll say it again here: If you are looking for the Wii to be your main source for gaming, you will be disappointed. If you’re looking for something different to compliment an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 and you have a family, chances are the Wii is for you.
